Speed Dial not loading

  • Opera 21.0.1432.67 on Win 7 (32bit)

So I'm still testing this Chromium bastard, and beyond the awful usability problems there is a new one this morning : Speed Dial won't load up. You know, that thing that replaces my bookmarks? Not there.
I get about:blank and a "Loading..." message on my tab, but nothing further.

I was running Opera for quite a few hours yesterday and left the computer running (almost 24h) so I'm not sure if it's related, but closing Opera does not seem to help.

Earlier Opera would just hang on startup... not sure what's going on here. The vaunted process spamming doesn't seem to help.

Any ideas? (beyond "Upgrade to 21! It'll solve everything!" )

  • Oh and now links from Facebook don't seem to load... that's just fantastic... -_-

  • speed dial is empty but strange when i check in opera link, there are my links in speed dial section

  • Opera 21.0 on windows 7 64bit

  • Are you running any security / antivirus / anti-hack / performance booster / tweaking software?

  • In my case, windows firewall with opera enabled to access internet from home/work and also checked public to be sure. Antivirus is windows security essentials. No boost software running. Also - this problem exists with my home and also work P.S. Forgot to mention, I did update from old opera (different UI, settings, bookmarks...) after update I noticed problems with speed dial!

  • In my case no.
I've updated to 22 (22.0.1471.50, there is an empty .16 folder in there, btw) and the issue is still present.

I can connect to websites directly, but for example, if I click on a link after a search in Google, I can't go there.
If I click on a link in Facebook it opens a tab but the link never loads.

The problem only seems to happen after a few hours running the machine and Opera.
What's weird is that closing all open Opera tabs/windows does not solve the problem. It's like when I open Opera again it's was still running all along...

And yes, I'm checking with another browser, so I know it's Opera, not my connection.

  • Sorry I should've said "the new issue" is still present. Speed Dial is back and I can't seem to reproduce the problem.

  • I'm only aware of that problem (displaying "Loading..." instead of any page including Speed Dial and internal pages) happening when a third-party software conflicts with Opera. A known case for me is one where Baidu PC Faster is the culprit, but it could also be a security software, a bank or game anti-hack "shield", etc. Close, disable or uninstall them and restart Opera/computer to test.

Look for suspicious software in the computer (add/remove programs, processes running it the task manager, startup items, scheduled tasks)...
Additionally, you can scan you computer for malware with AdwCleaner for example.

I don't know in what else I'd put my bets, it'd have a new unknown cause.

  • I figured it out! It's Opera Turbo!
Disabled it and it hasn't happen since...

    I have a similar problem.

Every 1/4 (approximately) of the time I open a new tab and type the address, the page won't load. The tab turns white (no speed dial), the address bar becomes blank and it shows the page loading indicator but nothing happens. After this, the tab becomes unusable so I have to close it and open a new one.

This happens when I run Opera and I have many tabs opened. Some of them will just be like this and if I want to get them back I need to close Opera (since I cannot copy the address in that tab).

This is incredibly annoying, especially sine I want to switch to the new Opera for good (12.xx has huge memory issues). I kept waiting to see if this will be fixed, I tried normal and portable installation but no luck. And this is happening on both my Windows PCs.

Any ideas on what might cause this? I use Norton 360 and I disabled the AV and the firewall but no luck. Now I am using a portable installation since I still use 12.17.
I did scan my system but it's clean. I also tried to disable startup 3rd party apps and to remove scheduled tasks but no luck.

  • I found the solution for this problem on my computer. It was Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit that kept the speed dial from loading. I disabled it's protection and now Opera loads just fine.

  • Disabling Opera Turbo worked for me
