Opera Mail on Win7: Audio notifications are intermittent

I get audio notifications for incoming mail when the program opens (as if I need them then) but afterwards I get nothing. Other times they work well. I have no idea what to check. Of course my speakers are working fine and other audio functions are fine. Is there a problem with this program and audio notifications?

It's a known issue that happens to certain users. No one has ever figured out a workaround and Opera never figured out what the problem was.
