Opera "Not Responding" after first page is loaded

Hi, After launch Opera works until a second tab or a new site on existing tag is selected. It then greys out and will not shut down without using Task Manager. It will not then reopen but box "Can't open user profile directory...." appears. The only way to use Opera after that is to restart computer and the loop recommences. Any suggestions?
