Can't open new tabs from some websites

Recently, on certain websites I frequent (some are deemed "not secure" by Opera, but I know they are and always have been - not sure this is relevant but I have a feeling it might be), I am unable to open a link in a new tab, both by clicking the mouse wheel and actually selecting "Open in new tab" in the context menu. The new tab will very briefly show up in the tab bar and almost immediately close on its own.
On many other websites this works as expected. Since I suspect the security/privaty settings I checked the settings for the site, even allowed popups, but this didn't help and I didn't find any other setting that might be responsible.I can't really imagine this being a settings issue in any case, since disabling very basic functionality without clearly notifying the user (or at all, really) or giving them the option to re-enable it is an absolute no-go in my book. Especially for a developer version.
Anyone have an idea what might be causing this behavior?
I am using Opera Developer version 57.0.3065.0 on Windows 7 Pro x64.
