      Hi there!

I havn't used Opera in I while on my Mac (Running Lion 10.7.5), and I wanted to download the latest version. When I clicked on Check for updates the following windows appear: You are using the latest version of Opera". Is that possible? On the website I can download version 21. Is my OS too old?

      Regards,
      John

Download, install and try Opera 21, then you will see why it is not currently offered as an upgrade.

        Basically they are completely different.

The new versions of Opera are now based on the Chromium (Blink) engine (old Opera was based on Opera's own Presto engine), which is the main underpinning (guts) of the browser. New Opera has been completely re-written from scratch, Loosely speaking, think Google Chrome with Opera's own (new) user interface (skin) bolted on top. With most of what was in old Classic Opera (Presto) now not available any more (Eg. mail client, editable mouse gestures, customisable gui (tool bars etc), side panel (F4) etc etc. New Opera now has a similar ethos to most other modern browsers, which offer a pretty stripped down browser out of the box, with a huge emphasis on the extension/add-on model to facilitate any options or functions not offered by the main browser.

The only thing I can really suggest, is for you to try out the new version first hand, and see for yourself the direction Opera is moving to, and whether you like it or not. Keep an open mind, and try not to compare the two (old and new), as Opera has changed quite dramatically from what it once was. Hopefully this change will be for the better, as development is still on-going and new functions are being added throughout this development process.

It's really easier if you just download and try it. You mightn't miss anything, or you might miss an obscure little checkbox option I would not be able to tell because making a table with every feature/option in Opera 12.x would be totally time consuming and not worth it. There are new features like Stash, some signature features (Speed Dial, Off-road/Turbo, etc) and other small ones were already developed into the new browser, while others are under development (e.g. sync), some work differently, lack a characteristic or changed places (the Recently Closed trash can menu is in the main menu now, some settings in other places, etc) and others we know that won't come back (or don't know whether will come back someday or not).
You may be interested in a comparison I made in this topic on Opera 20 vs. Chrome so you can see benefits that the new version still has over it and other browsers (of course it's not a complete list and may not represent fully the latest version available at the time you read it).
