Why is Opera using up so much memory?

I have eight pinned tabs and usually another dozen tabs open.
The task manager shows 500 MB of memory footprint for GPU process (who is invoking that process anyway? maybe some hidden mining cookies?) and an avergage of 150 MB per tab resulting in 2 GB of RAM in average.
Is this supposed to be a normal behaviour? I would prefer a smaller memory footprint. Are there some advanced configuration options (I remember some experimental tab hibernation feature that I read about) or is there a way to generally lower or cap memory usage?
