Decreasing bookmark toolbar icon size

Hello,
Just switched to the Opera browser and noticed that the bookmark icons are very large (imo). I am having trouble decreasing (or increasing for that matter) the size of the bookmark icons in the toolbar. I have searched extensively on the webs, but can't find the solution to the problem. This tutorial seems very dated (http://www.opera.com/help/tutorials/personalize/ui/).
What am I missing? Is it possible to alter the size? Do I need an extension or different theme?
Version: 48.0.2685.39
System: Mac OS X 10.12.6 64-bit -

The bookmark icons do not look large to me. Maybe that is because I use only generic icons?

I only use the icons that are automatically given by the website, I guess you mean those right? For me they look this big https://imgur.com/pTJIJY9, the space between icons being bigger than the icons themselves.

Bookmarks toolbar should appear and disappear by hover OR by pin/unpin graphic option in the UI.

@rudrick You have bookmarks? I just have ugly grey squares. How do I get bookmark thumbnails?

Those are not big. They look like 16 X 16, the same as mine. I use only generic icons, as produced by the browser itself, not favicons.

@concretable Actually, the size of the icons is okay, it's the spacing that takes up a considerable amount of the toolbar. In Firefox and Chrome all my bookmarks in the bar could be displayed, Opera will not let me do that (as of now) I think. Unless someone has got an solution for decreasing the spacing between each icon?

I agree, the spacing between bookmarks on the bookmarks toolbar is too big. Why are such big gaps needed? If someone figures out how to reduce them, I would like to know.
