Where is are emails for Opera Mail stored?

  • Hello,

I'm transferring my email from one host to another host for my website. The only way I could do that was by downloading the mail and re-uploading it to my new host. However I can't find where the email for Opera Mail is stored so I can upload it. Can someone point me in the right direction?

  • Connect to both accounts via IMAP and just drag messages from the IMAP folder of one account to the IMAP folder of the other account. You can ctrl + a to select all the messages in an IMAP folder and drag the selection if you want.

You can do the same for POP to IMAP if needed.

However I can't find where the email for Opera Mail is stored so I can upload it. Can someone point me in the right direction?

See "Menu -> help -> about Opera" for the location of the mail folder. In it is a store folder. In the store folder is an accountN folder for each account (where N is the number for the account as seen in accounts.ini). In each accountN folder, each messages is stored in an mbs file. The mbs files are organized in the accountN folder by year/month/day/number.mbs.

Note that for POP, if you make use of low-bandwidth mode, messages won't be downloaded in full unless you right-click on each message and choose "fetch complete message".

For IMAP, that is also true. Same goes if you have just "do no download message attachments" set. But, in addition, not all messages will be synced properly if you have low-bandwidth mode set. Also, by default, a message isn't downloaded in full until you open it. So, for IMAP, on the incoming tab in the account's properties, make sure "low-bandwidth mode" and do not download attachments" are turned off. Also, make sure "make all messages available offline" is set. Then, check/send if needed. Only then will all messages be downloaded in full so that the store/accountN folder is complete.

Also note that drafts for accounts are lumped all together in the "drafts" folder in the "store" folder.

Now, the other option you have is to right-click on a view in the mail panel and choose "export". That way, you can export messages by view for more organized importing/uploading. Note though that if not all messages in the view are fully downloaded, Opera will ask if you want them fetched. After it's done though, Opera won't continue with the export. You'll have to try the export again and then it'll work.
