The address bar only displays four addresses

Question:
Why doesn't the address bar show more than four previously visited addresses? In this example, when I begin writing "washingtonpost", the bar only shows four addresses, despite the fact that I've visited far more pages on that site. There is no option of scrolling down to look at more links. This applies to everything I write in the address bar; only four links to previously visited sites are shown.
I could of course use the History tab, it shows all the pages I've visited, unlike the address bar. But having the History tab open is frankly annoying. I would like to just punch in a few letters in the address bar and quickly select the correct link from the selection that appears.
Can the amount of links the address bar displays be altered somewhere? Or better yet, can a scrolling function be added to it somewhere that would allow me to look through all the links, even those hidden because of the four address limit in the bar?
