  • Historically, the advice has been that Flash was buggy/insecure and was not needed because videos were becoming HTML5 (or somesuch). Now, having removed Flash from my iMac (el capitan) system, I am getting "Flash needs updating" messages, even from the BBC news website.

Is it now generally considered safe to have Flash running in MacOS ?

    Thanks for your comments.

  • I'm not a big fan of Flash, but if you make sure you do regularly install security updates, I think the risk is acceptable.

So my suggestion would be to either turn if off, or update.

Note that you can customise the behaviour of Flash in the Opera Preferences, under Websites > Flash. For example, you can disable it for all but a few websites.

  • Thanks, macfreek. That was helpful.
