      Hi,

Is there any plan to implement Push without GCM? I'm interested in implementing a completely browser-based messaging system (no need to install any app), but my main device is a Blackberry 10 device, where Opera runs handsomely, but push notifications do not work. Non-Google Play Services-devices (Amazon Kindle?) are out of luck too.

Ideally something which detects and leverages Blackberry's Push service would be perfect for me, but other options would probably be good too.

      Cheers,

      Álex

Chrome and other Google services works hand in hand and serve the same purpose, Opera products can use Google services for their purpose too, that's common knowledge. For example FeedNews (Opera ASA) app will throw upfront the news based on Google search keywords even you use adblock or any tracker killer or any kind of browser.

It's alright to use Google's services for many purposes. However, Google Play Services is a proprietary library for Android which enables many features (such as push), but which cannot be freely installed in Android devices- the device has to adhere to some Google guidelines.

In practice, people who root their phones, run non-Google sanctioned devices such as the Kindle, etc. sideload Play Services and continue using the dependent features, but they go into a gray area.

It would be preferable not to depend on Play Services, so people don't need to do shady stuff.
