I am using Opera 40.x and have opted to use thumbnails in the SpeedDial instead of the Tiles. I like having 8 columns wide. The only negative side effect of zooming down to get the 8 columns is the label under the thumbnail shrinks. Being over 40 it's not as easy to read small fonts as it used to be. Is there anything I can do other than using all caps to make the labels a bit larger while keeping the columns? I am on a Laptop so there is only one screen res that is sane to use, 1366 x 768.

I have no answer to your question, but would be interested to know how to use thumbs instead of tiles in speeeddial (I have not found how to do it).

        Thanks.

Sadly, no. You can't increase the size of the text only. Maybe cut it down to 7 columns.

how to use thumbs instead of tiles in speeeddial

Open the link in your speed dial. To the right of the address bar, you will see a red heart, click it. A small window will appear with the tile of the speed dial in the middle of it. Use the arrow buttons on the sides of the tile to switch between the tile, a screenshot of the pages and some of the images that appear on the page. You can also recenter them and zoom them using the mouse and mouse wheel.

Sorry I missed your follow up. I like to have 8 dials per line. What I did was compromise. I used thumbs for the sites where I recognize the page preview. If the graphic is a bit vague I switch it back to a tile. Best of both worlds. 😉
