Media player app distorts aspect ratio

I have a Hisense 4k TV that uses the Opera TV platform. There's an app installed called "Media" that plays media (video, photos and music) from a DLNA source.
It works well, but stretches the vertical aspect ratio of cinema windscreen videos (14:9) to fill the screen, even when set to using the original size of the video.
This makes the video look horizontally squished. Can anything be done about this?

Turns out it's worse than that - same problem occurs with the Plex client too. It applies to any video source that isn't 16:9.
Cinema-style video (say 14:9) looks like it's stretched vertically to fill the screen, and then the black letterbox bars applied over the top. This also means that not only is the image distorted, but if there's subtitles they have the black letterbox bars over most of the text!
There's a lot more about this issue with reports from on around the world here:
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/202135/incorrect-cropping-issue-plex-for-opera-tv/p1Hisense support are worse than useless on this issue. But it reflects badly on the Opera TV platform.
Can anyone from Opera please provide some comment on this?

Got through to someone at Hisense support in the UK who seems to know their stuff. Turns out that it's a known problem with the Hisense firmware (I'm on V00.01.00a.F1128)
There's supposed to be an update released in the next couple of weeks which addresses this.

Same issue with VU Iconium 50inch Ultra HD TV at india.
- it screws aspect ratio
- Subtitles no customization at all
- backward video rewind is buggy it goes forward.
- back on remote leads to come out of player while player seekbar appears
