Get rid of theme overlay

Is it possible to get rid of that dark overlay on what should have been a cheerful sunny theme?
I've tried going to opera://flags#no-theme-overlay and fiddling with it, but the horrible darkness persists. I've tried this in Opera 36 and Opera Developer 38. Makes no difference in either so far as I can see.
I don't care about unreadable titles under tiles. The tiles are a big enough clue for me to get where I want to go.
Windows users seem to have access to a file called persona.ini where they can force a change - is there an equivalent for this Mac - OSX 10.10.5 / Opera 36.
