I'm confused about version numbers. I have 12.16, which Check for Updates says is the latest. However a website says my browser is out of date and refers me to the Opera site where I downloaded 29.0.1795.60. When did the numbering change? Also it would be useful if you could see at www.opera.com what version you would be downloading before you did.

Opera versions 1 - 12 are based on the Presto rendering engine. But then Opera decided to re-create the browser from the beginning, based on Chromium. They jumped two version numbers and the first new, chromium based version was Opera 15. But as they created it from the beginning, many features were lost, so it's like a whole new browser.

So, the latest version of the "old Opera" is Opera 12.16 (or 12.17, depends on OS), but the latest version of the "new Opera" is 29.

        Opera Presto: Version 1 - 12
        Opera Chromium (Blink): Version 15 - 29

Opera 12 has many features, but is outdated, and stability, compatibility and security is not good. With Opera 29, it's the opposite. Therefore, you may experience that many sites doesn't look well in Opera 12, so I recommend that you install Opera 29 too, and try to get used to it.

Thanks for the clarification. It explains why I have an Opera Beta thats v30.0.
You would think there would have been some way to automatically upgrade from v12 for those of us who don't hang around this forum or follow the blog!
