Here is the comparison between 27 and 28: http://sta.sh/01d85223xp9e
Even when the "Experimental start page" is enabled in opera://flags/, it looks almost identical to the usual startpage in the new version. I cannot understand why developers have ruined this awesome looking feature. I use Opera browser on my Asus Vivotab Note 8 tablet, and I can say that the previous version definitely looked much better because I was able to quickly identify all sites icons, and it required less space on a little screen. Have you tried to distinguish what site is represented by some small page screenshot consider that the screen diagonal is 8 inches, and its resolution is 1280x800? It is very hard and painful for eyes. Please make the experimental start page look as it were in 27 version. I would really appreciate this.

I agree! The previous update cut out the possibility to easily switch the design of the express panel, I've had to use opera flags to switch it to the experimental panel. And now this extremely useful feature is totally destroyed! I use Opera ONLY because of it's experimental express panel with logotypes of sites instead of page previews - there is no such feature in other browsers!

Opera staff, please return the experimental express panel with logos or tell us how to do it ourselves.

They just ruined the square shaped speed dials...... completely! It was the perfect Opera Start Page to date. The changed setting in Flags is giving off some ugly looking speed dials now...

That "ugly" speed dial will let you change the tumbnails and syncronize.

@sidneyneto: I think that's the biggest problem of "new Opera". People liked the old version because it was highly customizable. They made nice looking Speed Dial and ruined it in Opera 28 - that's the fact. Not all users need sync options, but at the same time for some of them nice looking Speed Dial makes a change. But they can't get it, even by changing the settings in Opera Flags page.

It's too bad that Opera Software ASA changed the philosophy of creating a web browser in such way...:(

I agree, this new speed dial looks AWFUL and now it's more difficult to find anything. They should at least allow the extensions to manipulate the start page, so you could customize it - or at least be able to change the items shape and show icons instead of page screenshots, because the current start page is just terrible... :yuck:

lando242, where can I download it? And should I? I was searching for the download link, but couldn't find it. I'd very appreciate if you post it here. Thank you in advance!

PS: Opera, give us back the normal-looking speed dial, people want tiles, not screenshots! The websites look all the same, there's no use in screenshots, who even could think that it's a good idea? OMG!

dev versions can be downloaded from the desktop team blog, here's the latest one: http://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2015/03/sidebar-extensions-speed-dial-syncing-customizable-shortcuts-opera-developer-29/

The new speed dial in the dev version allows you to customize the thumbnail from the heart menu (so you can choose a full website screenshot, the coast style text based tile etc... for each dial, like you can already do with the bookmarks manager thumbnails)

                      Here's some examples: http://imgur.com/a/kIwnK

I think the new sd is coming along nicely

It is interesting why they did not stay with Opera 26 design of an experimental page.... ? Speed dial in Opera 29 dev is as fast as in Opera 26 in my computer (I can not say this about Opera 27 & 28). Opera 29 works well. But why they transferred navigation bar into the bottom of the page? Why they didn't give us the possibility of choosing what we prefer? What happened to famous before (till opera 12.17) "Customization"!!! of that browser?

It took 19 years to get to Opera 12. There had only been 2 years since the release of 15. Rome wasn't built in a day. Go dig up a copy of Opera 4 and give it a spin to compare the development times.

the heart menu in opera 29 doesn't work - just shows white page. and if i understood it right - because of that i can't customize tiles in speed dial... how do i get the heart menu working?

Read the release notes, its a know bug. Close the browser and restart and it works. Reading documentation is pretty much mandatory if you want to be using the testing releases.

lando242, with all respect, I don't want to read the manual to a browser, I just want a normal looking speed dial! And I'm russian - my english isn't that good, plus I don't have that much time... Would you be so kind to post a clear instruction?

i think opera need more options about speed dial thumnails like displaying icon-webs or sites instead of ads-screenshots; numbered; color customize - background, color of letters...)

i recommend that anyone who really love oprea to try using opera dev 29 it's faster and some ext on speed dial now avaliable on new start page (the speed dial-ext only enable in old start page - opera stable)

in opera dev 29 new start page by default will be ebabled and no longer load sreenshot just like opera stable; it's more stable - all speed dial thumnails will displayed as url, no icon-webs , however it doesnt have a refresh button and designed style of the updated new start page will be the same

I agree that 'tiles' speed dial was more readable!

question is: why did they need to ruin it in the first place?

                                            lando242
I managed to open the heart panel.
Alright, in opera 29 the express panel does look better, but it still not the same as in opera 26-27! v29 lets you replace screenshots with domain names, but where are the favicons (logotypes) of bookmarked sites? Only the default tiles had the favicons and the google tile, but others just look like www.website_name.com! So how do I make the favicons show up in tiles instead of domain names?
