Is there any way to get the customization options like there used to be back in versions 15 and earlier. I'm finding this Chrome clone rather lame.

Yes, there is a way to customize. It's called: extensions. Visit the Opera store to discover them. AND you can also use all the Chrome extensions as well.

Why force users to download more things just to customize a program which used to be customizable right out of the box? You don't need to download a program to change your desktop image or your screen resolution, why should end users be forced to download extensions to make very reasonable and minor changes to the look and feel of the browser?

You don't need to download an extension to change your Speed Dial background image/theme nor to change the webpages zoom level. You need to download programs to add a tabbed Windows Explorer, a dock or lateral bar, skins (like WindowBlinds), more window controls/functionality, etc.I guess you see my point by now. No program will give everything everyone may ever want out of the box.

... No program will give everything everyone may ever want out of the box.
The problem is that many Old Opera users felt they had a program at hand that, at least in a manner of speaking, gave them nearly everything they ever wanted in that software... and now the program design (to them) no longer has that. So they view all that's transpired as a regression - hence, the complaints.

Pretty unhappy about this as well. The reason I liked opera was because I could customise what I wanted. Now like everyone here has said, its just a chrome copy. I cant even configure the speed dials the way I used to! Opera came out with the speed dial, and it worked so well, why downgrade?

Stop whining and ask specific questions. Educate yourself by using the search function. You can't configure the Speed Dial. Then search to find out how. You post that EVERYONE says Opera is just a Chrome copy. Uh... no... not everyone; just those who don't know any better... the uninformed crowd.... the whiners.

I shall expand on OP's post:
there are no more option or way to re'enable bookmarks (main) toolbar for the top of the page
There are no FUNCTIONAL extensions to make it look so or even basic bookmark manager build inn- As ie manage bookmarks, bookmark page , search bookmarks
Reason, why I am responding- with identical to majority forsed to change users ... I kinda doubled up in my task here
