No, it says 96.0.4693.58 and that's a fact what's on my screen when going to opera://about/ -

@heksa Strange. I don't see that build number on the download ftp servers anywhere, and the https://www.opera.com/download page is not serving me that build number. And, Opera isn't showing that build for an update.
I would download the Opera installer, goto the URL
opera://about
, take note of the "install" path, close Opera, uninstall Opera (don't choose to delete your data when uninstalling), delete the install folder, launch the new Opera installer, click "options", uncheck "import data from default browser", adjust the other options as you like, and install. Then, I would make sure you have 96.0.4693.59 for Opera GX or 96.0.4693.50 for regular Opera.

I will do that. But the one that I have now, saying it is 96.0.4693.58, was definitely downloaded from your servers. -

I reinstalled the software as you instructed, now it says it is 96.0.4693.50.
Preliminary, no tab jumping in this. I will continue using and testing this. -

@heksa Okay. Sounds good. Maybe Opera put a build up and pulled it down where you got it before it was pulled. Not sure.

One strange thing that happened at least twice, was that when I opened the opera://update/ page when I wanted to download and install the latest version via that fucntion, some separate autonomic background update fetching software that probably is started at the same time when I open my computer, intervened, and it seemed to hijack the process when opera://update/ page said that it finished downloading the new version, just before I got to the restart the browser message and button in that opera://update/ screen, this other process ran by that separate autonomic background software did the update before that and overrode the process in the opera://update/ page, or so it seemed. It didn't look normal, when remembering how the process normally looks when using the opera://update/ page. -

But I must add to this, that I have Norton 360 (full version) and IObit Malware Fighter, AdwCleaner and SUPERAntiSpyware (free versions) on my computer, and I have updated and used those constantly, so it's unlikely that I would have viruses, trojans or something like that on my computer. And when I downloaded the OperaSetup from here: https://www.opera.com/download
some days ago and reinstalled it then, it likewise said that I had Opera 96.0.4693.58. But when I uninstalled the software couple of hours ago, downloaded the OperaSetup again and reinstalled it as instructed, it now says it is 96.0.4693.50 and seems to work normally now. -

Norton 360 (full version)
If it has a software updater feature that can check and update programs for you, I would turn it off or at least exclude Opera from it if possible. Things can sometimes go wrong when something else updates Opera for you.

No, not once have I used any Norton procedure to update my Opera browser. I've always used OperaSetup from https://www.opera.com/download
or the update page
opera://update/
, mainly the last one.
And what I said in the "One strange thing that happened" message, that separate autonomic background update fetching software which overrode the process in the opera://update/ page, seemed to be an autonomic Opera background application, everything hinted to that and nothing told anything other. -

@heksa Okay. It was probably Opera's updater task in the Windows Task Scheduler.

tf you gonna release a stable update with a known bug that obliterates the user experience? Returned in 97.0.4719.28 from 96.x in which it was corrected.
