At this point I'm just quitting Opera, for someone who uses a laptop every day this is a game changer... It's sad that this thread has been open since 2019 and no opera developer has done the effort to just copy it from any other browser. Almost 3 years man...

@alongarc but there is an option, if you click (Control + Left arrow) then it will go back, if you click (Control + Right arrow) then it will go forward.

@kice I agree with this, I have only just now gotten the Opera Browser with GX, but seeing the lack of accessibility caused by no two finger back functionality for trackpad users (while I use a windows laptop with only a trackpad) makes me immediately wary of the quality I can get from this browser. The fear is doubled when seeing that this topic has been up since 2019 with no answers. If the product isn't meant to be used by those browsing on a laptop, it should be let known on the advertisements.

This feature was available on opera as a deep blue circle with an arrow inside. I have used it for about four months and then one day it just suddenly stopped working. I guess that happened after an update or so but cant be sure what was the exact reason. In opera there was also a setting to change the sensitivity of this gesture. I also get it when I reinstall opera in my PC but it only works at the first launch of the browser. Then closing the browser and re-opening it makes this feature disappear with it's settings. This must be a bug or some incompatibility issue with the OS which the developers are not fixing for a while. I don't know the reason behind this. I am using opera for about eight years and it is very difficult to switch to other browsers for me. Opera has always been the most feature-rich browser as I ever experienced. I would be very happy to see this useful feature back again.

I am commenting so that hopefully this post gains more traction with the developers. I am using a surface pro 6 and would also greatly appreciate a back button. Maybe some kind of alternate interface could be developed for people using touchscreen computers with larger buttons & controls that are commonly used, as they are becoming increasingly popular.

I just switched from Chrome to Opera GX and literally the only reason why I'm going back to Chrome is because I can't use my 'back gesture' from my laptop while surfing.
All the cool features Opera has and it doesn't have one of the most used and requested yet. This should be something built-in Chromium shouldn't it? -

i don't understand, opera enabled that feature for a brief period then disabled it and is the only browser without that gesture! if oepra values it's users opinion, they should enable it immediately or im moving to another browser.

Just replying again to hopefully get a response from the developers. Just switched from chrome to opera today but this is a real dealbreaker on windows.

@christophehad Thanks, this actually works better than expected. Still weird that Opera doesnt just implement what is industry standard at this point.

Opera supports Chromium extensions, so you should be able to install a gesture-based one as I have. I sadly don't remember which one I'm using, but the simple two-finger back and forth gesture option does exist on both my Mac and Windows versions of Opera after downloading an extension for it.

@thomasaldridge If you goto the URL
opera://extensions
when you have a chance, it'll tell you the name of the extension. -

@weirdnemo Sorry for my delay, this extension is simply called "swipe-back" and is available on the Chrome Web Store since Opera is a Chromium-based browser. Here is the link below! It works greatly for me on all my Windows computers, enabling both previous and next swipe functionality like Chrome. Hope this helps you!
