I agree Opera isn't quite compatible with Gmail. Actually Gmail is the culprit I guess.

Opera 15 is the answer for this problem.

Gmail and other Google services are optimized for Chromium, Google did this on purpose. As much as I love Opera 12.16, I had to switch to Opera 15 just for this problem. All Google services run smooth as butter, but at the cost of features, customization, and the true feel of Opera.

It's a fact of life - 12.x isn't well supported or runs slowly on a few sites I use now. Gmail works fine for me with 15, IE or FF..

I think it's due to recent changes with Gmail, not Opera. I am still using 11.64, and only recently started getting problems with Gmail freezing Opera for a minute or more e.g. when trying the display the Spam folder. That's all my Gmail account is good for. I don't use it to send mail, just to receive mail for my web site, which is 95% spam. Why not use your My Opera account instead?

No — it's using the Standard interface.

Thanks but if Opera users wanted to use a second Chrome, they could already do this by downloading Chrome itself, right?

Exactly, and you know what was happening? Because of sites lagging and breaking in Opera like GMail, people were already switching to Chrome or other browsers regardless. Opera is losing users because of these issues affecting 12.x and now that Opera offers people an usable browser all you do is nitpick.

Opera 15 isn't a second Chrome. Opera 15 has an user-defined unlimited Speed Dial, built-in mouse gestures, full closed tabs list, Off-road, downloads pop-up, etc... As long as you want a browser with additional features, Opera is the answer.

Thanks for your feedback on my feedback. 🙂

My post is not nitpick. It is essential feedback. If you look at my history of requests (and the history of victorxstc), you can see that quite a handful of useful features or changes available in recent version of Opera were requested by many many people here, me included. So I believe my feedback as a concerned user can and will give good information to Opera team, no matter how it looks small.

                        1. I don't have any problems with changes in Opera's rendering engine.

                        2. I don't have any problem with more than one rendering engine(s) in the software (like Netscape had two different rendering engines).

                        3. I don't have problems with two different versions of Opera (light and sophisticated). Nor I don't have any problem with a single Opera software that can be switched to Expert mode or Light mode.

                        4. I don't have any problem with Opera grabbing more users. Actually I have converted many of my own colleagues and friends to Opera.

                        5. But I do have problem with the severe lack of features that come with Opera 15. And no, those few features you counted do not satisfy me, now being adapted with a so much more sophisticated software. Those few features make it something like Chrome with add-ons, at best.

                        6. I am an Opera user for a long long time (10+ years), so I am at least as concerned as you about it, if not more. It is the product I am enjoying currently and I think I should give my feedback on this 180-degree U turn of Opera policy. I am extremely worried, so I am shouting about it.

                        7. I think this new Opera will grab a good deal of non-technical users at the cost of losing many of its current base and its originality. Maybe this is why in the first place they have not updated the current 12x users with the 13, 14, and 15 versions. Maybe as you once said, they are testing it and the user feedback.

                        -------------------------

Anyways I deeply hope Opera would not discontinue its masterpiece. It is (was) a unique browser. At least I hope if Opera team is discontinuing the 12x franchise for ever, it embeds the very sophisticated set of features 12x used to have, on the new Chromium-based franchise. Or, embed the Chromium-based rendering engine into its own unique software (as the new engine, or as the Second rendering engine besides its already powerful super-fast engine).

                        Thanks again.

Once opera went over to the 12.xx and especially 12.16, Gmail has been painfully slow. I have used Opera for years and I have not experienced slowness with Gmail like this before. I have Opera 15 and it does run like a champ with Gmail, but many features are taken away and you no longer have control of certain things. If I go to Chrome and I go into Gmail, it runs very well; for obvious reasons. IE does pretty well also. I hope that Opera works on getting the advanced preferences put back into Opera 15 so that we have more control of things. Being able to tweak Opera so you can get into certain sites not really designed for Opera is a blessing.

Gmail on Opera 12.16 rev. 1860 is a disaster. It works so badly and drains the computer's resources. It is so, so slow. I don't understand why, they are supposed to have the same rendering engines. Every time Gmail freezes and crashes the browser, you lose what you had written in other tabs. I'm desperate, it only gets worse over time 😞

I have had the same issues and then started using Chrome since it ran so well in Gmail.
Opera developed Opera 15, which uses the Chromium engine. So it looks and handles things much like Google Chrome
Here is the link for Opera 15 - http://www.opera.com/download/get/?partner=www&opsys=Windows
Opera 15 loses many functions that Opera 12.xx has. The title bar no longer exists uptop, bookmarks no longer exist, the Ctrl+Enter function is gone.

BUT, bookmarks can be brought to the Speed Dial page and this is where you now go to use them
I loved the Ctrl+Enter function as a time saver so I looked further for fixes and found Opera 17 Developer
Here is th link for it - http://www.opera.com/download/get/?partner=www&opsys=Windows&product=Opera Developer

After loading Opera 17 I noticed it was painfully slow, so I played around and managed to get things going fine
I copied the Opera 15 folder over into the Opera 17 folder and got things to work the way they should
I sounds like a pain but it really isn't

This is all Windows info and NOT MAC
In your personal directory under - \appdata\roaming\Opera Software
There will be a Opera stable - this is Opera 15 and a Opera Developer - this is Opera 17
BACK THINGS UP FIRST - Copy Stable over into Developer - then start playing
                              Hope this helps

It's not just Gmail, other Google sites struggle with Opera 12. The Google Play Store is a total mess and the Google Music section is completely broken in Opera 12. I just don't understand how it's been allowed to get to this, and to just abandon Opera 12 the way they have is unforgivable.

Hi, I'm tired waiting for Opera to merge compatibilty (version 15 probably) with it's features. I am no willing to open different browsers for different sites I visit. So is there an alternative to Opera with similar features like
                                  single key shortcuts
                                  online sync
                                  mail client
                                  3rd party cookie rejection
                                  ...
                                  ???

Nope. There are alternatives but not as good. I'm using Chrome right now, it's lacking many good features not available as extensions, unfortunately. Only reason I use it is speed executing Gmail.

I use Firefox for Gmail (I dislike the incompetent Chrome), and visit all other sites using Opera 11.60. I hope the developer team can add both engines to a single Opera.
