Hi y'all, first ever post so be gentle with me.

In late March I went into Control Panel > Programs and Features and noticed that I had Opera Stable 66.0.3515.115 and another Opera Stable(since updated, currently 68.0.3618.104) listed, strange, I obviously don't need two, i'll uninstall one, what can possibly go wrong!? So I uninstalled the earliest installed one as you would, problem was it uninstalled both, my heart sank, only a few months earlier i'd lost 750+ Opera bookmarks when my previous Laptop had gone from working perfectly well to dying a death within a few days and before I'd found out if it was possible to back-up Bookmarks, everything else was saved on a flash drive thankfully, please don't tell me through my stupidity i'd lost another 250+ more Bookmarks - I used another browser to download Opera(a very very long half hour) and my bookmarks were still there, phew

Oh yeah the question, anybody know why there were/still are two Opera Stable(s) listed, and neither are my recently updated version 68.0.3618.125?

      Windows 10 64-bit

        • Download the Opera Installer first.

        • Then, in Opera, goto the URL opera://about and check the "install" and "profile" paths. If the profile path is not inside the install path (it shouldn't be unless you did a standalone/portable installation), do the following:

        • Close down Opera and delete the install folder using Windows/File Explorer.

        • Open up the Windows Task Scheduler and delete any Opera autoupdate tasks.

        • Open up regedit and delete any Opera subkeys under the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall" key. Do the same for Opera subkeys under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall".

        • Delete the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Opera Software" key and close regedit.

Then, Opera will be cleaned up and won't show in Programs and Features etc. But, your data will still remain.

Launch the Opera installer and click "options", make sure "import data from default browser" is unchecked, adjust the other options and install.

Then, Opera should be good to go and the Program and Features entry should be the correct one and have the correct version.

Cheers, thanks for the time and effort you've put into your reply, the thing is though i'm getting on in years i'm only a novice when it comes to Computers and that all sounds rather erm scary.

To be honest I was hoping if anybody replied they'd say uninstall the latest version in Programs and Features then the next time you restart your Computer it will have sorted itself.

I'll read your instruction again, i've already read them 5/6 times and probably give it a go in the next few days and let you know how I get on.

If I decide not to, and leave it as it is, is it doing any harm to my Computer security-wise especially both version being there? Is it better if i'm not sure what i'm doing to leave well alone?

No problem. It's all good. If you want something simpler. Download the Opera installer. Then, uninstall all the Opera's you see in Programs and Features. But, when you uninstall make sure not tto check the option to delete your data. Then, after it's uninstalled, launch the Opera installer, click "options", make sure things are how you like and install. Then, you should be good to go.

As in, uninstalling Opera (while not choosing to delete your data) and reinstalling Opera should fix it.

As long as Opera still updates fine and as long as you have the right version when you goto the URL opera://about, you can leave everything alone and it won't harm anything, and you will still be safe. So, no need to fix the entries in Programs and Features unless the number of entries and the version number bugs you.

Cheers, thanks again, i'll probably follow your instructions in your 2nd post if I do anything but i'll leave it as it is for now.

I've known about the double entry in programs and features for a while now but was wondering why this time when I clicked on Update & Recovery in the Opera Menu a few days ago the updated version isn't showing up in Programs and Features instantly as it had the previous 2 or 3 times i'd done the same - no big deal I suppose if everything is working Okay.

Sorry to be a pain but one last question if you don't mind. In my op I mentioned most if not all my Data? was saved to a Flash Drive, I didn't do that as I wouldn't have known where to start, but I did manage using instructions on-line to transfer said Data on to my new Laptop(early January this year), I was was quite chuffed at myself!

The thing is on my new Desktop i've got a Desktop icon which I guess is just a shortcut to all the Data saved onto the Flash Drive originally, and i've never seen a reason to delete it(possibly too scared to), so was wondering if that is a possibly reason why there is a double entry in Programs and Features and the reason it says it was updated 26/02 was that was the last time I clicked on the Icon on my Desktop wondering what the hell purpose it served.

It's unlikely that was the cause unless Opera's program files were included in that data and you were launching another Opera and it updated or something where it added an entry to Programs and Features. But, I guess it's possible depending on lots of things.

If I was in the right queue when they were handing brains out i'd have just clicked on the icon again yesterday(24/05), and if that date had appeared in Programs and Features i'd have known that was why it had happened, but no muggins here has to ask it on a forum. I'm beyond help 😅

Knowing my ability to make a mess of even the simplest of tasks I saved my bookmarks to my Laptop and Flash Drive first then followed your instructions in your 2nd post and it's all sorted now, thanks
