Opera for Linux freezes my system

Hello all,
I am running a desktop PC with Kubuntu linux 9.10 installed.
I currently use several browsers for different things however Opera has, for longer than I care to recall, been my daily driver Browser.
Lately however I find it unusable. Any attempt to run Opera sees my resource use go through the roof and the drive access light comes on and stays on. Eventually the PC becomes inaccessible and I have to press the reset button to recover use.
I see no mention of this on the forum so suspect this may just be an incompatability between something I have installed and Opera which is a great shame.
I date from the tme when we had to purchase Opera so, at least 20 years of use if not more. This is quite sad.
If anyone can suggest a strategy to discover what the issue is I would be grateful. Many thanks in anticipation.

Try backing up your profile (the entire ~/.config/opera folder), deleting and starting fresh.
Or just export your bookmarks from opera, delete it, start fresh, reconfigure it and restore the bookmarks
Or you could just try opera-beta or opera-developer and check if they have the same issue. -

Do the BackUp as said (rename would be enough) and I suggest to try:
Chromium Command Line Switches:
http://peter.sh/experiments/chromium-command-line-switches/Create a TestProfile with --user-data-dir=.
On Windows looks like:
"C:\Program Files\Opera Software\Opera\launcher.exe" --user-data-dir="C:\Program Files\Opera Software\Opera\Profile\TestProfile"
No need to always rename the Profile or keep a Beta/Dev just to test when problems (a part that they would run different, Fixes/Bugs).

Follow the Signature's Backup | Reset link.
Take the opportunity to start a Backup plan and even create a Template Profile.

WHen the problem is manifest the RAM is maxed out also.
However, after following some of the advice here, namely remove the entire app with apt purge opera-stable and then restart and reinstall opera-stable I seem to have a little more stability.
So, for now, things are looking good.
I will report back when I have used this for a few days. Thanks folks.
