Opera stopped opening new tabs - but now it is back - am I going mad

Opera for Windows suddenly stopped showing the tab bar and everything was opened in a new page.
Having spent over an hour trying to find the problem & if I had inadvertently changed a setting without any success. Just as suddenly it reverted back to normal.
Was there some glitch in Opera or am I going mad? Have used Opera for years and never had this problem.
