      Hello everyone,
I'm using Opera 36 on Windows 7. The system crashed today, and after that all my normal bookmarks for the browser disappeared. Instead, it shows old ones that I haven't been using for a few years. I can't restore the system since I don't have the backup copy, and I'm not sure if it's still possible to access my bookmarks. Were they just deleted in the crash? Or is there some way to get them back? I'd be very grateful for any advice, since I know next to nothing about computers.

Hi @ammy12, you can try the following steps:

        1. Click the Opera's menu, and select "About Opera", copy the path to the profile, and close the Opera,

        2. Open your file explorer, and navigate to the profile folder, search for the "Bookmarks.bak", and overwrite the "Bookmarks" file with it, relaunch the Opera, and see if this helps in your case πŸ˜‰

Thank you so much @l33t4opera, I tried it but unfortunately the bookmarks listed in the "Bookmarks.bak" were the same old ones, not the ones that I'd like to get back. So it didn't work. I guess my laptop's acting out must have really messed up my Opera πŸ˜‰

@ammy12 Are you sure, that by "restore the system" you mean the "Restore system files and settings" feature, and also that you want to restore the "Bookmarks", and not the items on the Speed Dial page?

Ammy, did you recently back up your bookmarks?

Try searching for just "bookmarks" - without "bak".

Well, or you might have changed your profile's/some files' location some time ago. Now after the crash, the poor thing might have lost that path/location, but happened to have found the old one which hadn't been deleted at the time...
              Can that have happened?
If it can, then there might be that actual file present still, which is not .bak.

@l33t4opera yes, that's what I mean. But unfortunately my laptop crashed again, several times since yesterday, so I decided to take it for repair. Maybe that will take care of the bookmarks problem, but if not, I'll try your method again. Thanks a lot for your replies anyway! I appreciate that.

@joshl thanks for a reply, if they bring my laptop back to life I'll search for the old bookmarks file. Hope I'll be able to find the old path if it still exist, as you say.

@ammy12 It would be good, and even recommended, that before someone will attempt to fix the crashes, he should at first try to recover the lost files (including the Bookmarks file), because, the more times he will run, and work on the system, a chance to recover of the files will be smaller (they might be overwritten by the other data, and thus the recovery of the files will be impossible).

"Windows 7’s Previous Versions tool may have created a backup of your file, even if you haven’t set anything up. To check previous versions, navigate to the folder that contained your file, right-click it, and select Restore previous versions." - you can find more details here, and you can read there also about other, 3rd party tools for recovering deleted files.

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that. As for restoring the system, I looked into the System Restore in the Control Panel, but there weren't any restore points. I also right clicked disk C and tried to restore to a previous version, but there weren't any too. I must have stupidly messed with some settings long ago and forgot about it.
Thank you both for your help and your time, but it seems the problem is bigger than I thought. The laptop keeps crashing and is making strange noises, so I can't do anything with it. Hope it can be repaired, and if the bookmarks are lost, it'll just be a painful lesson for me. Never forget to make backups πŸ˜‰
