      I get a "0xc0000142" error after installing Opera_20.0.1387.82
      Here is a screen cap of the error message;
      http://i58.tinypic.com/2icb38o.jpg

This error message appears 5 times before Opera window appears.
Unfortunately a rotating "wait" icon appears on the tab and never disappears. The same error message (x5) appears if I type anything in the URL bar and hit enter.

      It's installed on a Win7 SP1.
I've Opera 12.16 build 1860*** running without any problems on the same system.
      ***(Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.16)

I'd be glad if anyone could help me to solve this problem. Thanks.

BTW, I have tried reinstalling Opera, Adobe Flash, Shockwave, Java but didn't help.

It appears there is no solution.

I have been using Opera for 12 years and recommending it to everyone.
It's sad to see a nice product go bad.

I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2013. Just tried installing & running Opera_20.0.1387.91 while KIS is not loaded but still have the same issue.

              What is a x0000142 error?

This is what I found through a search:

To help resolve this issue, use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:
Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run As Administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow (yes there is a space after sfc) The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

                  SFC also did not help.

I have noticed that this issue showed up after the day I installed CCleaner and updated Catalyst Control Center.
I tried re-installing Catalyst CC but it did not help.

Can CCleaner cause such an error about Opera?

It could if it was used and something important was removed. Installing CCleaner alone shouldn't create a problem, but using it (or anything else) to "clean up" registry entries is not something to be done lightly - and then, only if one has made a backup first. Likewise, one needs to use wisdom and caution in removing files if one doesn't exactly know what they go with. The danger of using cleanup tools in any kind of auto-clean mode is that the user gives up the opportunity to over-ride the choices made by the cleaning engine. On the other hand, unless you know what you're doing, deciding whether to manually remove each of the many "deletable" candidate files coughed up by a typical cleaning tool can be daunting as well.

Such cleaning tools are best used for initial general cleanup of a new system to clear it of extraneous manufacturer-installed junk (and before many user-desired apps have been installed), and later on for removing a specific named program and its cruft...

                      Thanks for the explanation blackbird71.
I have already uninstalled CCleaner and I don't know if it created (or kept a copy after uninstall) a backup of the registry.

I am currently writing this using Opera 20 in "Windows Safe Mode with Networking".
It runs OK in Safe Mode. Something in Normal mode prevents it from running.

I have tried running in Compatible Modes, like Win7 without SPs, XP sp3, in 640x480 mode, 256 colors... and the other options in the Comp Mode menu.
I also tried repairing .NET Runtime 4.5.1 using it's own repair mode (don' know if Opera is a .NET software but I did it anyways)

And here is another hint; I installed Chrome and it also does not run! It starts up with it's GUI and does nothing, even it's setting menu does not open. (It runs OK in Windows SAFE mode just like Opera does)

(I have OPERA 12, Mozilla and IE 11 on this system and they have no issues)

This is a weird problem and I really want to fix it without re-installing Windows and see what causes the problem. I have always treated my Windows'es (3.1, XP, 7) as if they were pets and you know you don't throw away your dog and get a new puppy when he gets sick.:)

                      Any suggestions are appreciated.

Safe mode in Windows installs only the OS and the drivers for mouse, keyboard, and standard VGA mode. It does not load the commercial graphics driver, printer/scanner drivers, etc. It also does not load most executables from apps and other such software.

You mentioned you had installed Catalyst Control Center (related to your video drivers), so it's possible something in that install has led to a conflict with Opera and Chrome that other browser engine types don't encounter. CCC enables all manner of custom display modes for the ATI Radeon graphics chips/cards, and that may be where a conflict originates.
