Leftover old versions of application data, what to do about them?

In case you don't know, when "updating" Opera 15+ doesn't actually "update" your installation. Instead, it simply completely installs a newer version and tells the launcher to start launching the new .exe from then on. It's fine, but the old versions do not get removed. This is cluttering the system and is pretty much supposed to be unnecessary.
Can I safely remove those without having any impact on the latest version installed?

Yes, you can delete previous versions' folders in Program Files\Opera xxxx, where xxxx is your channel (Developer, Next, or just Opera for Stable).

It's not cluttering. It only keeps the previous (01) most recent version so if the new one fails after the update it runs that one instead.

Yes, when I un-install Opera 12 it took away Opera 18 to. Had to reinstall Opera 18.

This is something else, entirely different, and I'm not sure if its the intended behavior (probably not).
