Can I install both Opera 20 and Opera 12.16

Or is there some basic incompatibility - since they use different engines? I'm still trying to figure out how to use my old bookmarks. No point in railing about changes to Opera - just trying to work around them. I'm still trying to figure out how to use Password Manager and the Bookmarks Bar in 20

Yes, you can. You merely have to change the install path of either one.
I had Opera 12 on "Opera Presto" folder and Opera 15+ on "Opera Blink" folder. They work just fine

I did get both installed. Oddly, there are two program folders in Opera 20, one entitled
"Program Files x86", which contains Opera 20 files, and another entitled simply "Program Files" into which were downloaded Opera 12.16 files. The big red "O" icon on my desktop is now assigned to 12.16 and 20 is still on my desktop, but with a blank instead of an icon. Curiously, Revo Uninstaller also lost its icon on my desktop and now has a blank instead of an icon.
Incidentally, I tried moving the bookmarks.adr file from my old computer's Opera 12.16 to the new computer' 12.16 - didn't work -

The easy way to import bookmarks is to install Xmarks from Chrome Store and synchronize bookmarks from server to pc.
This works fine only if you first synchronize bookmarks from Chrome or Firefox through Xmarks -

It's because you have a 64 bit system. "x86" is for 32-bit files.

I have Opera Next installed, just to make sure the new and inferior version doesn't pollute my main browser. It also allows me to keep track of changes to see if there's any chance of migrating to it yet. Opera is slooowly adding features to it so it may eventually approach usefulness, but I'm generally a huge naysayer on this. Notes alone is a blow to lose, it's such a super-quick way to copy in boilerplate text or links I have saved - right click and pick the note.
But try installing Opera Next. That gives you the bleeding edge version and the last good version 12.16 side by side.
