Opera downloads and then crashes for .pdf links

When I click on a link in an email or a website that opens to a .pdf file, Opera does download the file, and crashes.
I tried changing the programs associated with .pdf, .html, ...
I am trying to download to the desktop, which didn't work, then I created a desktop folder, into which Opera set up another folder (temporary downloads) ... .doc files download fine.
Not sure what else to try.
