UBUNTU: having trouble upgrading: Software just stops when I click 'install'

Hi, any help that can be given will be appreciated.

Currently on 37.0.2178.43 -
Trying to move to 45.0.2552.881
Download the file
Double click to open
Ubuntu Software starts
When I click 'install' it just goes away with nothing happening, and 'software' isn't in the running processs in System Monitor.

Have tried running directly from the Nautilus directory: same result.

Running ubuntu 16.04 LTS
