Just avoid clicking on the favicon. Click anywhere else on the tab, and it will not close. You can go to the next tab with Ctrl-Tab and to the previous one with Ctrl-Shift-Tab.

The × appears to hide itself automatically after x tabs open on Windows.
What I did is ticking ‘Enable advanced keyboard shortcuts’ which allows switching between tabs more efficiently using 1 and 2 rather than CTRL+Tab.

Good solution, on mac this is set to cmd+1 etc. by default.

But Cmd-number works only for the first 9 tabs. If you have more, you need to use Ctrl-Tab.

Do you not have the option I have mentioned on Mac? I did not mean the standard CTRL+[0-9] or CMD+[0-9] shortcuts; just the numbers 1 (to go to the previous tab) and 2 (to go to the next tab).

I totally agree with u all for the current usage, but in detail I would have wanted Opera to be more generic than other browsers. Also the latest update has proven that. But,
In my opinion It would be a good feature.

Ctrl-number (1-4) changes Spaces, not tabs. Just numbers 1 or 2 do nothing. Cmd 1-9 (not 0) will select tabs 1-9.

In my opinion It would be a good feature.There is a button at the extreme right end of the tab bar that looks like two parallel lines with a dropmarker under them. That button gives you a list of all your tabs. You can select any one of them by clicking the appropriate item in that list.

I just started trying out Opera as well and turning off the X buttons was one of the first things I tried to do. This would be a nice feature. Firefox used to have this feature by default in about:config and there are now extensions that bring the feature back since they removed it. If there is an Opera extension to remove the X buttons then that would suffice.

@concretable I am sorry for asking, but are you sure you have the setting I have mentioned enabled? It is disabled by default as far as I am aware. It would be a pity if it is not available on Mac. I rarely switch between tabs by mouse since enabling it.

I am not using the advanced keyboard shortcuts; in fact I was not even aware of those until I looked it up. Instead of using 1 to go left and 2 to go right, I can use Ctrl-Shift-Tab and Ctrl-Tab. There is no setting to use Ctrl-number to go through tabs, since MacOS pre-empts that to go through Spaces.

@concretable Enabling advanced keyboard shortcuts allows one to use just the keys 1 and 2 on Windows. I do not see why it would not work on Mac too.
@verpag I also believe it would be a nice feature which I would want to use myself. Perhaps it is an idea to post it to the Suggestions forum, although I feel it has very little chance to make it to the browser, especially since the × is hidden after opening a certain amount of tabs already.

I am sure that using 1 or 2 would work with MacOS if I wanted to use the advanced shortcuts. I am not interested. Most of the time, I click on the tab to select it. If I have a lot of tabs, I can drop down the list of tabs and select one from there.
