will opera/vpn run on xp? I have tried twice to download the vpn version but end up with standard browser, good as it is I would prefer vpn, I have it on my w7 pc's, would be a bonus if I could get it on my trusty xp.

No. Opera 36 is the last version of Opera that has support for XP and Vista.

You'll need to find a separate client. There are extensions, and I'm aware of at least one desktop client.
