Since updating to Opera GX 136.0.6008.50, Opera GX has started crashing repeatedly immediately after launching. The browser opens, crashes, automatically reopens, crashes again, and after several attempts it finally shuts down.

The problem also occurs when interacting with the address bar. In my case, simply typing a character can cause Opera GX to crash immediately.

I have already tried recovering and reinstalling Opera GX, but the problem persists. This makes me think the issue is not caused by my profile or installation, but rather by the current Opera GX build itself.

Opera GX 136 is based on Chromium 152, and the crash appears to be related to Chromium's Windows font/DirectWrite subsystem. The crash may involve dwrite_font_proxy_impl_win.cc, where Chromium performs checks while handling Windows fonts. If this is the same issue, it could explain why Opera crashes as soon as certain parts of the interface or fonts are loaded.

There are also other recent reports from users experiencing very similar crash loops after the latest update.

Could the Opera GX team confirm whether this is a known issue in 136.0.6008.50 and whether a fix is already being prepared?

For now, it seems that the only real solution may be to wait for a new Opera GX update containing the Chromium crash fix.

It seems this is a bug introduced with the latest Opera GX 136.0.6008.50 update. Opera GX 136 is based on Chromium 152, and the crashes appear to be related to Chromium’s Windows font/DirectWrite system.

Basically, when Opera GX starts and tries to load certain fonts or render parts of the browser interface, Chromium can hit a fatal error in its font handling code. When that happens, Opera GX crashes, tries to reopen itself, crashes again, and eventually shuts down. That’s why you can get stuck in a loop of the browser opening and closing several times.

This also explains why recovering or completely reinstalling Opera GX may not fix it: if the problem is caused by the new Chromium/Opera build itself, reinstalling the same version just installs the same bug again.

There are several recent reports from other Opera GX users experiencing very similar crashes after the latest update. Opera has also released a newer Chromium/Opera build for its regular browser that includes crash fixes, so hopefully the GX version will receive a similar fix soon.

For now, I think the best option is to wait for Opera to release a new Opera GX update that fixes the crash. I wouldn’t keep reinstalling the browser repeatedly, since that probably won’t solve the underlying problem.
