Now that Opera GX is available on Linux, I would really like to request an official ARM64 / AArch64 Linux build as well.
I am currently using an AYN Thor with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 running ARM64 Linux (Armada OS). I have actually managed to run the existing x86_64 Opera GX Linux build through FEX emulation, so Opera GX itself can work on this type of hardware.
However, the experience is not practical for everyday use. Because the entire x86_64 Chromium/Opera process tree has to be translated to ARM64, CPU and RAM usage become extremely high even on relatively simple pages such as the YouTube homepage, and I have also experienced crashes. Hardware acceleration can partly work through the native Linux graphics stack, but the x86_64 translation overhead remains a major problem.
A native ARM64 build would solve this and would be useful for a growing range of devices, including:
-
ARM Linux handhelds
-
Snapdragon-based laptops and tablets
-
ARM development boards and mini PCs
-
Future ARM Linux gaming devices
For me, using another browser is not really an equivalent solution because one of the main reasons I use Opera GX is the Opera ecosystem and synchronization between my devices, including bookmarks, passwords, history, tabs, etc.
Chromium itself already supports ARM64 Linux, so I hope an ARM64 Opera GX build could be considered now that Opera GX officially supports Linux.
Even an experimental ARM64 build would be extremely useful.
Thank you!
