Sucks that this hasn't been solved yet but a potential temporary fix is if you're going to search something with 1 letter at the start, put "g" and a space before it, because that's the shortcut for the google search engine.
For example if you wanted to search "d pad" type "g d pad" and it will search the google for "d pad". Its still annoying though.
