@Marys-Drahin - I was noticing this also, but I found that (unless you have the tabs minimized) you can grab in the top section of the tab bar. See green hatch area in my screenshot.

Many thanks for adding the option to keep the New Tab button on the bottom of vertical tabs plus open new tabs at the bottom. You nailed it in your original implemenation, and the new "wrong"
default was driving me nuts!
