Okay, apologies I jumped the gun based on a coincidence.
Turned out to be a video driver reverting to one that doesn't work correctly (Nvidia Nouveau) that occurred just before, or just after I updated Opera.

Right click context menu over bookmarks bar, tab bar and location bar goes to a black rectangle when the mouse cursor moves over it.

If any text is selected in location bar, box becomes white with a grey line at bottom of box.
Observed in Opera 40
