Plus, if this really is the issue (the compatibility between the versions opera and chromium ffmpeg codecs are build), opera devs should move opera beta to stable faster. Chromium 63 reached stable at December 8th, so chromium-63-based opera beta should move to stable sooner.

Because 50's a beta, which I worry might be a worse option that adapting 49, especially if not technically able to fix other things. I didn't know about the beta, either. Opera should be getting the criticism, as they must know these issues will happen due to not releasing the right codecs at the same time. Just glad to know the option of keeping previous codecs, so things work.

Opened Synaptic Package Manager and removed chromium ffmpeg codecs extra 63.0.3239.84

Then downloaded and installed codecs-ffmpeg-extra_62.0.3202.94 as per http://launchpadlibrarian.net/345863538/chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_62.0.3202.94-0ubuntu0.16.04.1317_amd64.deb

Restarted Opera 49.0 and videos are running again.

However Synaptic now shows this:

Oh and it seems the new Opera VPN that presently offers only 3 regions does slow videos down quite a bit when turned on. When VPN is turned off videos play very well.

Thanks so much for this. Running latest Opera version, Mint Cinnamon 18.1, and Youtube flash-html5 add on; with this, videos would play, set to html5, but not live videos. Now they work!

@jimunderscorep Thanks for confirmation, jimunderscorep, and for the code, as I've been able to see further recommended dependencies to check out. Yes, here's hoping Opera make sure all systems are covered, especially as major Linux OS upgrading isn't set to fully update for a few years yet, in Mint's case anyway. And people are running all kinds of older systems or previous releases, and having to now manually install things that just need to still be there isn't fun and may be beyond what many (new) users could handle.

apt-cache policy libnss3

Packages.ubuntu.com reports that ubuntu has 3.28 as a security update for 14.04, 16.04 and 17.04 and 3.32 as th default one one for 17.10 and 18.04.. Assuming that mint 18.x is ubuntu 16.04 based, you should be having 3.28 as well...

With being worried about the browser being insecure, I hunted round for some deb files. Found those, and now the system reports what's below. I had not known the 3.26 version would be numbered 2.3.36 in synaptic, which I found out after installing the debs. At least it's resolved now, and thanks for responding.

I was using 18.1 just a couple of weeks ago, and have needed to return to it ... beyond me why Opera would suddenly upgrade so fast to something that doesn't look upgradeable in synaptic.

Concerned that system is insecure; will need to look for another browser if unable to update.

Hi, using Mint 18.1. Ran the Opera 49 deb file, but nothing happened. Typing 'opera' in terminal showed it needing NSS 3.26. I don't know what that is. Haven't been able to allow updates for Opera in Update Manager because of this; I let it go through once, but it still updated to the fatal error version. Luckily I had an Opera 47 deb file, which runs.

General faffing with different gif sites seems to have fixed it at this point, but it was 24 hours before there was an issue with the uploaded gif, so I'll see if it happens again.

Unfortunately, gif avatar has stopped working ... of 17 images within the 6kb 0-setting gif, only 3 now show, then it goes blank. It was working fine on day 1, but 24 hours later doesn't. I haven't done any updates/changes. Mint 18.3, latest version of Opera. Others say they can see it working fine on Firefox, so I don't know what's changed. I haven't changed anything. Have tried clearing cache, rebooting Opera and system, re-uploading the gif.

Other extensions broken by using HTML5 version, though.

I just hit a problem today where only the video (blacked out) shows on Youtube's page ... already had YouTube Flash-HTML5 extension installed. Checked settings, refreshed page, and that seems to have fixed things. Still speed dial problems (Mint 18.1 Cinammon) though; flicker/vanish according to size, and difficult to use, but at the moment the HTML5 extension has fixed the YT issue. Lots of big companies changing things over in the next few weeks, so there seem to be a lot of glitches going on.

Hi, just to ask again. There's been an update since, but the dials are just the same. Really too difficult, as if they are small sized (easier to use) they vanish, and having them large sized makes it difficult to organise them. Please can this be fixed, as I'm having to look for another browser.

It's Cinnamon 3.2.7 (Gtk 3.18.9). Some other details are; lenovo i7 quad-core, 16 gig ram, Radeon R9 255 OEM using gallium 0.4 Cape Verde drivers, X.Org 1.18.4, 1920x1080 on pc monitor and display tablet. OpenGL 3, due to haswell/radeon, but Mesa 17.0.7 and high kernel balance that out.

Oops, forgot to say that when I zoom the speed dial to quite a bit larger, the issue improves. Zoomed down, issue is worse.

Hi, and, yes, menus are working otherwise, but it's difficult to use the speed dial/work with any dials and folders. Some of it, especially when it's an opened folder, is a case of the icons in the folder going invisible, while being able to see the main speed dial icons behind. If there's any other tech info I can give, just let me know, and thanks for responding so quickly.

Just to add, oddly, when I activate firejail for Opera, that stabilises things to some degree. Still some pretty bad flickering etc, but I can see the icons and folder contents.

Hi, am on LM 18.1, kernel 4.10, mesa 17.0.7. Using stable repository for Opera updates. When I go to speed dial, it's impossible to open a folder and see the contents, and both within folders and on the main speed dial, items vanish when moused over, or are just not there.

Hi, just wanted to say thank you very much for fixing the issue that happened when running a dark theme on LM 18.1; right-clicking now = no greyed out menu anymore. Awesome. Loved Opera before, and to find it runs so well now I'm on Linux, is brilliant.
