Additional info for the ones taking an in depth look: A Win10 x64 update came in today: KB5001330
So either the latest Opera GX update 73.0.3856.431 or the latest windows update (or both combined), seem to be triggering the issue.
However , this doesn't happen on Chrome, for example, as someone mentioned earlier. So this leaves me wondering it's not related to the windows update specifically, unless Opera uses a specific windows feature modified in that update, that Chrome doesn't. Otherwise chrome would be affected as well.
Same issue.
Opera GX updated today to 73.0.3856.431 then this started happening.
This still happens as of today 8/14/2020.
Opera's built in adblock doesan't block youtube ads, while other content blockers (ublock origin for example) do block them.
Checked all lists and languages, no changes.
Unchecked all, no changes.
Checked some, no changes.
At this point the only workaround for me is to move away from this browser's built in adblocker.
@leocg Regarding other extensions, ADBlock Plus has the issue. UBlock Origin does not.
Tried disabling the lists, there lies the problem: At some point in the last days, this new NoCoin list option did show up (compare to my previous screenshot, this wasn't there a few days ago). It was enabled, so I had to uncheck-recheck it back. Voila!
If I disable "Opera Ad Blocker Site Fixes" list, disable "NoCoin" and re-enable just this one back, it seems to work properly once again, and the ads seem to be gone for now (will update if this changes). This is the only way to make it work. If I have all 3 enabled, the issue Still happens. There seems to be a conflict with the NoCoin and Site Fixes lists.
It'd be good to report this to the Opera team that manages that list so they can check what's happening with it. If I can be of help with that, let me know.
Side note: If I disable them in descending order, when un checking the third option, all 3 will "re-check" by themselves (is this expected behaviour?).
////////////////Edit ////////////////
Did some further testing, seems it came back, Now the only way to make it work is by having the 3 enabled. Will post additional info if it ads reappear.
////////////////Edit 2////////////////
After some tries, the issue comes back, doesn't matter if I have the three options disabled, 2, or just 1. When it works, it works for a couple videos, then the ads come back, no matter which lists are checked/unchecked.
@leocg Satus report: As of today, 7/1, and with 2 Opera updates in between (current version: LVL 2 (core: 68.0.3618.191), this still happens. Exact same behaviour as initially reported.
I'll post the info as Op is right about this.
Issue: As of June 18th, Opera's built-in ad blocker isn't properly blocking youtube ads any longer. Instead, it shows a white overlay with a text ad and a background image ad behind, with a timer on the bottom left corner, and the option to "skip ad" on the bottom right.
Steps to reproduce: Head over to youtube and click on any video that has an ad.
Expected behaviour: The video should start without this blank ad on it.
Additional info: Tried disabling Opera's built-in ad blocker (which in fact Really needs an option to block custom elements as uBlock has) and enabling AdBlock Plus. Same results. However, this doesn't happen if I use uBlock Origin extension.
OS: Windows 10 X64
Version of Opera GX: LVL 2 (core: 68.0.3618.177)

@leocg Hey there. Sure, no worries, will do.
I couldn't find a stickied thread regarding Opera GX forum guidelines on how to format suggestion/idea threads, otherwise I'd have done it your way. I can see it could be somewhat easier to organize and keep track of, but I didn't want to bloat the forum with 5 new threads at once.
Greetings, Opera team and forum members.
I'd like to suggest (and humbly request, if possible), four small QoL improvements and minor options to improve the end user Opera experience.
1 - Please, let us close the WhatsApp sidebar gadget by pressing Escape as well. I'm primarily a keyboard user. Sometimes I'm just typing around and I don't want to get a hand away from the keyboard to the mouse just to close whatsapp. Small QoL change that would be super helpful.
2 - If only one tab remains open, let us close it (and close Opera GX as a whole) by middle clicking it. As a former Google Chrome user, I'm used to close Chrome tabs by clicking the mouse wheel over them. On Chrome, if you middle click the last tab, you close Chrome as a whole. On Opera, I can close every tab except the last one, so I've to close it by other means. Please allow this existing option to work even if there's only one tab open.
3 - Pressing "tab" could trigger the search function in the omnibar, without having to load the website and use its search option there. Let me clarify on this one. On chrome, you can type a webpage name, press "Tab" and GChrome's omnibar will automatically automcomplete the site's name (based on your browse history I guess), and allow you to search for anything you type next, skipping the process of having to oen the website. If you press enter, it will take you to the results page. This is a simply awesome feature I'm missing a lot from GChrome. Can we please have it here? At least for Youtube only!
4 - Would it be possible to use custom icons on the sidebar for existing apps? I've read a reply from you Opera team, stating you can't provide alternate icons for WhatsApp because it could devoid into legal problems. I understand that, but does that include the option for us to manually change app icons at our wish? Personal rant: If so... damn. If i buy a car, I'm free to remove its logo from the fron bumper and add a different brand logo. Being unable to do that would make me hate Zuckerberg a little more.
5 - Let us add custom filters/blocked items on the adblocker that comes with the browser. It's great that this browser comes with an anti ads tool built in! But I can't seem to find an option to block specific items on sites, where as UBlock allows me to do so freely, even with a visual tool that highlights the item/content I'm about to block. Can we have more control over what we're filtering?
That's all for now, If any further info or explanation is needed, feel free to ask. I'm willing to fully step down from Chrome and uninstall it once and for all, as I've seen development and community feedback is WAY more important for you guys at Opera, than what it is for the Chrome team.
Thank you.
