I have been using Opera GX as my default browser for almost 5 years and have consistently faced the issue of being connected to my institute's wifi, but the wifi captive portal just refuses to launch.
The only thing that seems to work is temporarily switching my default browser and logging in via Chrome, and then switching back to Opera.
While using Opera, when I click on the "action needed to connect" prompt, an MSN redirect page pops up, but it immediately fails to load, giving me a "no internet" or "DNS address could not be found" error. Sometimes, I don't get the prompt at all. Sometimes, it says I am connected and have internet, but nothing loads.
I have tried the following things to no avail:
- Forcing the login page to launch using the IP address, login web address from Chrome, http://clients3.google.com/generate_204, and http://neverssl.com (again, it just says "no internet" or "took too long to respond")
- Disabling all extensions (though none of them are related to internet connection anyway)
- Disabling "always use secure connections" (the login page sometimes shows up as insecure even in Chrome)
- Changing the DNS-over-HTTPS settings.
I used to think this was an issue with my institute's wifi and not Opera, but I am currently in a different institute and am still facing the same issue. Can't seem to find any viable solution online either.
