@khunroger: dare i suggest linkify for opera? judging from your list you could find it useful on occasion (it's an addon here. in the olden days of mozilla reigning over everyone with extensions i had one called linkification where i lost track barely using it anymore)

from what i understood the extension basically groups visually together already opened tabs (i thought it stored bookmarks like a typical folder and launched them all when clicked).

interested for this extra extended functionality? if you do, would you consider giving the option of a configurable to be permanently visible (or auto-hiding per settings), tabbed sidebar about the same size of what we see already when you click the icon on the side?
ending up, setting them in mind, as classic bookmarks bar and a thin discrete tabbed bookmarks bar on the side next to opera's sidebar, with negligible loss size-wise for a page (while keeping the original functionality. that's up to you really, if you like the idea, to combine them or make another extension. closing tbh i have no idea about coding i do not know if it's easy/hard or time consuming that's why i am just suggesting mindlessly )

the idea came from the discrete size and the way the tabs arrange, the extension already has thinking it could incorporate some extended functionality
