@pegasisworks Yes, startup is very slow. The problem is not Opera, it is snap. If you install from Snap which by default is in Ubuntu. Cold system start, Opera snap takes 9 seconds to start. Then warm start is quicker like an normal application.

Just install the deb package from Opera website. Then must copy the library libffmpeg from snap chromium-ffmpeg to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/ to fix the play video problem.
The Opera installed from deb, warm start still way faster than snap Opera.

why the whatsapp sidebar so slow to open? happens everytime the browser is started. Should be as fast as whatsapp in the tab. Telegram opens fast.

@bryce126 AI does not give same answer, and not necessarily correct. AI only learns from data. Data are defined by people.
Something like Music, even people cannot determine which is the best Beethoven symphony, it is not a fixed answer. If you do a search, you will get answer that no9 and 5 is not the top. no3 is, because can be votes from the music community

@pegasisworks I was using Brave, Opera is just as fast with better UI, video sharpening and chat sidebar.
There must be something wrong with your system for Opera to take 25s, did you use a stop watch? Even snap does not take that long. What Linux are you using? are you running on SSD, enough free RAM? CPU doing something else?

Workspace concept is not Group.
Workspace is a new space. Groups share same space. So tabs and groups are in the same space.

It may seem same to you because it is a browser, and all you see are tabs. Actually, your Groups and tabs are inside a workspace. The browser cannot do much in terms of workspace, is not fully utilised, that is why you think is a group.

A better example is the Desktop workspace. Although developers set launcher and wallpaper to shared across workspace, it can be different all together. Can have different widgets on differet workspaces. Not just grouping apps. Is space, same as when you have two tables. Each table has a box(group as in browser) of papers, but box is not a table.

@leocg your reply is incorrect. you don't even know the basic working of tab island. And Opera already made workspace replaced groups, and you still requesting group features. Group is old. Workspace surpasses Groups.

Tab island cannot group anything together. It must exist first by clicking on a link in newtab, is not suppose for you to drag any other tabs to it, even though you can. It is designed for tracking links. Group, needless to say again, can group any existing tabs.

disabling creation of tabs by link, do manually is losing the function of tabisland.

And what is wrong of being automatic? island is for tracking links opened in newtabs, group tab is for grouping. One is for tracking, the other is for grouping and you say is the same.
Workspace already replace groups, and you still insist island is a group. You will always insist island is a group because you are requesting group features to island something that don't work like a grouptab. @rogue-river modifying a function using extension does not prove any point, that the design was the same, because is being modified. Tabisland is a group by links clicked nothing else. Group Tab is grouping websites by you and save for later use.
Group tab is messy, shares same space as other tabs in the titlebar. Opera workspace is advanced tidy grouping of tabs.

Group Tabs can even group unrelated websites, content. That is not tabisland, to say is the same is out of this world.

@rogue-river that is why you are not understanding. Naming is for groups. Island is temporay use, you cannot save it, and not supposed to. Island is when you open links on a page into newtab, that is an action by human not AI. AI cannot know you opened a link from a page, then repeat again, and continue the same way. Edge AI grouping with a click is not grouping by links that came from. Eg. you open a link in gmail into a newtab, it is not related in anyway to be grouped by AI, one is mail and other one is not. It only can be tabisland, becuse you click the link into another newtab.

What is marketing name? Tab island design and purpose is totally different. You need to do some programming to understand.

@rick2: purpose of tab island is to keep track of where you are reading from when you open a link in a new tab. I do not think you are going to use many of them. Tab island only shows when you need it, it is not you have to use it. There is no tab island when you just open a new tab, but you if you open links from a page into a newtab, that is when tab island activates.

@rogue-river: naming tab island, is same as grouping, there is no point in naming them, because it is automatically grouped if came from the same source. Group tab is worse, you need to manually group them, waste of time, makes the titlebar a mess. That is why Opera has workspaces.

@ianpg can you attach a screenshot. What do you mean when you say there is no border? can you move the mouse to the border and see resize arrow?

@entomashadoll If you install Opera from deb package the newer versions of Opera does not play videos because it does not bundle the working ffmpeg lib. Then to fix it, you just copy the libffmpeg from the snap chromium-ffmpeg installation.

If you install snap Opera, it will play all videos.
So, you can try the latest snap Opera, however I much prefer the deb package Opera because is much faster.
