The latest version of Opera for Mac... 51.0.2830.55 is crashing on New Tab function.

Specifically, when one tries to open a new tab, either by pressing + icon or by right clicking (with magic mouse) on the title bar and selecting new tab more often than not the browser will close and reopen, displaying Opera crashed message on rare occasions.

I have conducted some additional testing, such as navigating between locations within the same tab, locations such as a website, Settings page, About page and so on, the transition is fine within the same tab but the moment I try to do the same via new tab crashing starts to happen in around two out of three attempts (66% failure).

I have cleared the history, restarted the browser, restarted the Mac, tested the browser as a single running application, ensured that no extensions are active (there were none to begin with) and even re-installed (something I thought I would have to do on Windows PC only) from full DMG download of the same version. Problem persists.

Opera is my main browser and until few hours ago (Western Australia time) it was working fine and without any problems what so ever until I updated to the latest version listed above (via About page). So it goes without saying that this is a disappointing situation...

Hardware: MacBook pro (13 inch, 2017, no touch bar version),

Recently I reset my Opera Sync setup (by resetting passphrase, which removed all existing devices and synced settings/elements) and re-setup sync from both Opera and Opera GX browsers (both browsers are installed on the same device, Windows 10 PC).

I quickly noticed that my Opera GX browser (which was second one to be added/setup for sync) adopted common settings from the existing settings that I already setup and synced for Opera Standard. This is excellent and I see no issues here, as a matter of fact I am delighted to see this feature in place and working.

As I monitored the process I noticed that the number of synced settings (as listed at Opera Sync site) increased, so I am assuming that there are common settings and then there are browser version/type specific settings (like settings for Standard or GX only), again no problems here.

As I decided to adjust some settings in one browser I noticed that the other browser almost immediately reflected the new settings, pulling them from the new synced version....

So, this is the point at which I am seeking assistance. Specifically I would like to know how is the settings synchronisation processed/prioritised.

For example:

What happens if I add new device/browser to the sync process, will the sync service force existing settings on the newly added device/browser or will it replace the settings stored online with these from the new device?

What dictates which settings (the ones online or the ones in the browser) are considered as active/principal and overwrite all others?

I am asking this because I do not want to be in a situation where I am reviewing all settings on all devices/browsers instances every time after I add new device/browser instance to the sync.

Your assistance in this matter is much appreciated...

Is this something that will be resolved by the Opera in the future (via manual update) or is there a need for end user action? And if so, what needs to be done (aside from re-downloading latest Opera build manually)?

Additionally, in the event where damaged Opera application is not moved to the Bin (cancel option is selected on the dialogue box) are there any left over downloads (failed or otherwise) that need to be manually removed from the specified temp directory?

@ernie I am also experiencing excessive but inconsistent (around 2 out of 3 attempts) crashing on opening of a New Tab in the discussed version (51.0.2830.55). I think this is related to the latest "stable" build as everything was working fine in the previous version and the problem started happening after the most recent update (few hours ago). I have started a separate thread discussing my problem but I thought I will let you know that you are not alone where crashing is concerned...
