As of a week ago I noticed the left sidebar was present on my Opera browser. Not normal for me. I go to Sidebar settings and turn it off and it is unpinned.
Later in the day it is back. There it is... left side of the screen the sidebar is present. I go back to settings and the switch is in the "ON" position again. turn it off again, and again and again.
Any idea why the settings switch keeps turning back on for unpin sidebar?

Not sure what the problem would be but mine works just fine on 2 computers.
Maybe re-install it.

Purchased my first Windows 10 Laptop to replace my Win ver. 8.1 laptop. With Opera now loaded on the new computer I need my bookmarks from the old computer. Can I copy a file from the old to the new and regain my many bookmark? Any help is a blessing.

I am currently using Opera 44.0.2510.857 (PGO) on my Laptop with Win 8.1.
I also still have Opera 12 loaded on the hard drive.
An analytical software program informed me that Opera 12 was running in the background and slowing down the computer even as O 12 does not show as "running" in Task Manager.
Question: Can I un-install Opera 12 without effecting Opera 44?

Maybe I know things that others should. 
Anyway... I thank you 2 for your assistance. And you are partially correct. I do not need VPN as much as I think. I became absorbed with the challenge as to why Opera was using up so much memory with it ON. The journey brought other things to my benefit such as DISM.
By the way, while I have you here, is there a way to get Opera to switch to a new Tab automatically when I 'right click' on a link (pop up menu 'Open Link in New Tab')? I always have to move pointer to the new tab and click it to see the newly opened tab. Am I missing something in 'Settings?
With cyber privacy and security being on the forefront of the news ,and only intensifying daily, I would ask ‘why would anyone not want to use VPN?’
I have enjoyed the Opera web browser for years and I hope to continue such for many more. Question is “why is it using up so much memory with VPN ‘ON?”
My work history includes being an electronics repair tech all the way back to 1979 when you checked individual components on a circuit board. I do not allow myself to be ‘beat up’ by a computer. (the price tag on my first 2 floppy drives was $1,200.00 in 1979 for a CMP based computer)
Anyway… I am still looking for a cause to this situation.
Hello zalex108 & leocg. I do not use Windows Defender because it will cause Windows to update and I am staying at Win 8.1 for now. Update is 'OFF'.
Well I have been digging deeper into the rabbit hole.
With VPN 'ON' I have avoided videos on purpose and performed normal tasks with Opera browser... email, news sites etc. And within 20-30 minutes Opera begins occupying 600 to 950 Meg of memory. Computer response to my command get very slow, to the point where I have to close Opera and re-open it and start over.
Still searching.

I think the problem is the AV 'real-time' scanning.
I do not visit what I consider risky web sites. I only visit News & radio broadcast. No USB sticks except for data back- up a few times a year.
I will try your suggestions and check CNET for AV software.
