Is there a way for me to change the default search engine?

Only to the existing ones on offer in the search engine settings or by installing an extension, if you happen to be running the new version of Opera (15+).

I would really like to use duckduckgo, but it is not in the list. The workaround needed for it to work is not optimal.

Don't quote me on this, but I read somewhere on here that there is a possibility that DuckDuckGo may be added to the default search engines some time in the future.

Yep we are looking at this now. The latest developer build currently has the option.
