Yeah, I figured it was the wrong link thanks. So, it's down to Ubuntu dragging their feet, right?

Vivaldi is looking really good at the moment lol.

Why don't you install the deb version? It is on 65 since mid November and it works as it should.

The deb version updatas as it should via apt and it is now on v65.

              $ apt-cache policy opera-stable
              opera-stable:
                Installed: 65.0.3467.48
                Candidate: 65.0.3467.48
                Version table:
               *** 65.0.3467.48 500
                      500 http://deb.opera.com/opera stable/non-free amd64 Packages
                      100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

In the Snapcraft forum https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/opera-stops-working-after-upgrade-due-to-gnome-connection-issue/14155/13 the developer of Opera commented another error that appeared after fixing the first one, I guess that's why the Snap version hasn't been updated yet.
The problem with the Deb version is that the video doesn't work, and the necessary to fix it is not definitive and every x time you have to do it again, video is too necessary in a modern browser and you can't afford not to fix it but in the end it gets tiresome to know that you're going to have to do the trick again in the future, that's why it's much more user friendly to use the Snap version because you know you won't have any problems with the videos.
In my case I'm not really upset to wait a little longer to update the Snap version, but I understand that if a couple of stable versions have already been released with some visible changes and the Snap version is still stuck people may start to get impatient.

OK thanks everyone. I'll wait it out a little longer I reckon.

You are right about that. I assume you know the solution if you are on ubuntu or on an ubuntu-based distro. A more generic one would require opera to be built differently on the ffmpeg part.

However, the snap version of opera would be equally useless without canonical's snap of chromium ffmpeg codecs.

I think there has been some movement on resolving issues with Opera snap.

                        https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/opera-requests-auto-connect-to-gnome-3-28-1804-interface/14505/7

Dunno when Opera wants to release stable version of 66 (I am thinking they might want to do that before the holidays kick in)...but it is quite possible that snap users might get next stable version of 65 or 66. Of course, it all depends on Ubuntu/Snap team helping Opera folks resolving current issues.

Since you are on ubuntu, why don't you just switch to the deb version?

Ubuntu still offers the chromium... family of packages as a regular deb packages for 16.04, so, now that opera is on v66, it willd efinitely be compatible with the v79 chromium ffmpeg codecs,

Other than that, yes, things will break once ubuntu updates chromium next month,

True, but I'm finding at the moment Vivaldi is filling in very nicely as it plays and has been playing since its launch Netflix and other video sites perfectly

I've run Vivaldi on Ubuntu in the past, it's not always easy to install. Firefox, on the other hand is the default ... and works.
