Opera 12: How to diagnose video playback problems?

  • Since upgrading from OpenSuSE 13.3 to Tumbleweed, opera 12 stopped playing webm videos.

    Example URL: https://www.isnichwahr.de/r260969-finisher.html

As there is no error message, how do I find out the reason? I suspect either hardware acceleration or missing libraries/codecs.

I already did a lsof of an instance playing a webm, then copied these from the working installation to the upgradedd installation.

If you ask why opera 12: Opera 15+x is incompatible to having two screens as it tries to bypass the window manager. It's incapable of integrating itself into the desktop theme. No option to limit history to the last n hours or automatically erasing it on browser shutdown as only that is useful. Cookies - enable them globally since you can't manage them by site except by visiting a sub-sub-sub-submenu ... or trust a random plug in author.

I guess by looking at the progress, Opera 0815 might bring back privacy and security.

  • Presto opera used to depend on gstreamer 0.10 for its html5 needs, not newer. So make sure you still have gstreamer 0.10 installed (or its libraries).

As for the reasons you stay in opera 12, you may be right about all those you mention, but I had to abandon it because of a)insanely slow js execution, definitely the slowest of all and b) problems on every single https site I visit, because of lacking certificates. Poor html5 support and the rest are of minor importance to me.

  • @jimunderscorep Thanks.

I now copied all files from all packages named gstreamer . I verified that /usr/lib/opera/gstreamer/plugins/libgstoperavp8.so does load and all dependencies seem to be found, too. strace doesn't seem to show any obviously missing file from gstreamer (grep ENOENT stracefile |grep gst is empty)

Still I don't get video playback nor an obvious error.

  • No idea. Maybe opera is looking in different locations for those libs.

Is it Webm video? Are you sure?
