Side-windows go full screen

I'm using opera on Ubuntu 17.10 Laptop. I switch between using a docking station and an external screen and using only the laptop. For about a week now, the whatsapp/telegram side windows (the icon on the left) launch a full screen of the chat UI and not the regular 1/3 of the screen. When I use the external monitor there is no such issue. I tried restarting opera (closing all the tabs first) and restarting the computer without any luck. Any ides?
