      Chromium devs have always refused to implement APNG support as it is not official, but Opera 12 (and Firefox) both support it, and it has a fair bit of use around the web. I'd like to see support for this added into Opera Next at some point.

        There's an extension you can install to support APNG — it works.

          Why should Opera embed APNG in new versions? It is is seldom used and only supported on few browsers as Firefox and Opera 12. And none on mobile!
          See http://caniuse.com/apng

          I know, APNG has better quality of animations than GIF.

            The point is, Opera has had APNG support for years, so it should be built-in to the new version.

              Exactly, it's had support for years, and I've used it. I've seen it used a fair bit, and it's only not more widely used because Chromium devs refuse to add it.

              The plugin works, but is inefficient (due to the nature of the plugin system), and will lag horrendously if there's more than one or two small APNGs on the page.

                Safari is getting APNG support;
                http://caniuse.com/apng
                Surely its time not for Opera to get it (again)?

                The web's been stuck needlessly on limited color, no alpha, GIFs for over a decade now. And web wouldn't have got anywhere if its always expected for everyone else to support things before you do 😕
