Opera 38 hangs on Debian 8.2.

I've been using Opera 12 for years, but am now forced to upgrade in order to access the latest https crypto sites.
The install process in Debian 8.2 LXDE completes successfully using dpkg, but invoking Opera at the commandline simply hangs indefinitely with no result and no activity showing on the CPU indicator.
Has anyone else experienced this, or is it a known issue?
