All Chinese characters of Chinese websites are replaced by squares,no more readable as before on 32-bit Ubuntu 16.04 LTS after upgrading from 38.0 to 39.0.

The same problem occurs on 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04 LTS after upgrading to 39.0 stable !

            Is https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/+source/fonts-noto-cjk installed?

I have no problem with CJK in Opera Developer (now 41) on Ubuntu 16.04.1 64-bit. 🐧

I have installed https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/+source/fonts-noto-cjk, but still has the same problem in Chinese websites. Then I uninstalled fonts-noto-cjk from Synaptic, Chinese characters of Chinese websites are back. Surprise!!! I don't know what happen, but I hope this comment can help you.

With 16.04, Ubuntu switched to Noto Sans CJK (https://www.google.com/get/noto/help/cjk/) for CJK (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1468027). Initially there was a problem with the packaging, which made CJK look thin in all Chromium browsers (it had been fixed for Firefox prior to release).

The issue (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fonts-noto-cjk/+bug/1575555) was fixed for Chromium (incl. Opera, Chrome etc) with fonts-noto-cjk 1:1.004+repack2-1~ubuntu1 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fonts-noto-cjk/1:1.004+repack2-1~ubuntu1).

The “tofu” issue is something I have not encountered with any version of Opera (or Chrome) on Ubuntu 16.04.

Maybe removing some other CJK font(s) might help. That solved a different CJK rendering issue for me in the past.

No such problem is found with Opera 38.0 on 32-bit & 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS . Problem occurs only after upgrading to 39.0 !

Opera 39.0 stable on 32-bit Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS is found with no problem on Chinese web sites .

I do think it's due to Opera 39.0's new memory save function .

I installed Opera stable 39.0.2256.48 on Ubuntu 16.04.1 64-bit. No problem with CJK (eg. https://zh.wikipedia.org/, https://ja.wikipedia.org/, https://ko.wikipedia.org/). fonts-noto-cjk 1:1.004+repack2-1~ubuntu1 is installed. So it does not seem to be a general problem with Opera 39 on Ubuntu 16.04.

Opera 38.0 works fine on Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS, the problem only occurs with Opera 39.0 no matter it's upgraded or installed .

If Opera needs to install new software on Ubuntu when upgrading itself, then it's not acceptable at all !

I removed Opera from my three laptops with 32-bit & 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS on August 7 .

If you by “new software” mean Noto Sans CJK, it’s not a manual install, and it was automatically updated in May.

I am suspecting that your issue is somehow related to the Chinese language pack, if you have that installed. I don’t have it, and also have no tofu in Opera (or Chrome, Vivaldi).

The said problem is solved by carrying out "sudo apt-get install fonts-noto-cjk" then "sudo apt-get remove fonts-noto-cjk" on both 32-bit & 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS .
